Frequently Asked Questions

Life changes both gradually and abruptly. Sometimes home care is part of a larger recommendation from primary care providers, but not always. In many cases, the need for added care cannot be narrowed down to a single event and instead grows out of the challenges that come with the natural, normal progression of life.

Home Care services can be as simple as a helping hand for household chores a couple of times a week all the way to dedicated personal nursing or palliative care.

If you or a loved one may need an extra bit of help, we’re here to help you understand your options so you continue to live your best life.

At Compassion, our goal isn’t just quality of care – it’s making sure that you continue to enjoy life as you navigate changes. Get in touch for a free consultation.

While there are a number of quality home care providers throughout the province, there are a number of factors that you should consider:

– Location
– Training
– Level and type of care required

Compassion has offices province wide, training designed and supervised by Registered Nurses, and a personalised Plan of Care that tailors our extensive services to each client. We strive to maintain continuity of home care workers in each home when available so there is as little disruption as possible. Get in touch with us and find out if Compassion is right for you and your loved ones.

This process depends on the source of funding. If you are paying for services privately, call your local office to discuss service details.

While not all Home Care services require a substantial medical component, our intake process involves a cursory visit from our on-staff Nurses.

Whether it’s you reaching out to us directly or through your healthcare provider, our staff will begin the process of customizing a plan for you. An on-staff Registered Nurse will visit your home and, alongside you, your family, and relevant healthcare professionals, they will craft a Plan of Care that fits your needs and your home.

Yes, but depending on the location. Not all of our locations currently or regularly offer this service, so please contact your local office directly.

NL Health Services will only cover a portion of the cost.

This depends on the severity of your condition and recommendations from both our in-house team and other healthcare providers. Some are entitled to more foot care than others. Normally it is one session every six weeks.

It depends. Many of the home care services we offer are covered under both private and public insurance plans like MCP, minimising the out-of-pocket costs. Our team, your insurance provider, and other healthcare professionals can work together to give you a more thorough overview of the monetary impact if there is any. There are also special considerations for Veterans.

Consideration should also be put into the value of staying at home and the amount of work and effort that the client’s support system is saving by having a helping hand. From travel days to last minute time off, there are a number of unseen costs that quickly add up.

Financially, healthcare and home care costs and how much you pay out of pocket can sometimes get complicated. Here’s how this breaks down once you have the determined the need for home care.

– First, everyone involved collaborates on a customized Plan of Care, which is priced based on regularly scheduled home care services.
– Second, funding is determined by NL Health Services, private insurance, or any other contributor. These contributions will reduce the amount you pay out of pocket each month. Some will be a capped amount, some will be a percentage, so how this adds up will vary.
– What remains is called a Client Contribution, which will be your out of pocket costs.

From an accounting standpoint, this Client Contribution is the first cost taken out every month. Once that money has been spent, any further costs are then taken over by any funding, subsidies, or insurance received. The general rule is that the out of pocket costs end up being only a small fraction of the actual full cost of services, so any scheduled care will quickly exhaust the amount you contribute.

NL Health Services determine client contributions. This is based on your income and their formula. The Home Care Agencies have no control over client contributions. Any disputes should be brought to your Financial Assessment Officer, not Compassion Home Care.

The client is responsible for the equipment and supplies in the homes. There may be financial benefits available to cover some or all of these needs, but supplying these materials is not covered by Compassion.

Our Care Workers must pass a vulnerable sector’s criminal background check and obtain a list of certifications (including First Aid) before being considered for a position.

Our training and orientation materials are designed by Registered Nurses, administered by RNs, and there is an RN and LPN in every Compassion Home Care office in order to ensure the highest level of training for all of our home care workers.

Home care workers are provided with further modules from both our in-house staff and specialised courses designed by professional associations.

No. Our Home Support workers are only required to do light housekeeping. All clients and staff sign off on the housekeeping duties required and not required during the beginning of service.

No. The Home Support Worker is there to assist you. You must be present in the home for our worker to remain in home.

Clients and families are responsible for snow clearing. Our home support workers must remain safe and avoid tasks that could injure them. Our max lifting requirement is 20 lbs. Snow can be quite heavy at times.

NL Health does not approve snow clearing as part of a client’s care plan. It is also a very time-consuming task. If they are outside for up to 2 hours, you as the client are not getting the attention and care needed.

At Compassion, home care is customised. We work with you, your loved ones, health care providers, and staff in order to form a Plan of Care that fits your care needs, your schedule, and takes into account any and all unique details that ensures you get the best, personalised care possible.

We always have an on-call coordinator available to current clients for urgent needs. Our staff is available during regular business hours if you anticipate a change in your Plan of Care.
